We ended up doing the 6 day version of the trek and not only did the company help us with all aspects of the planning for the trek, but also our acclimation hike, helping with sleeping bags/mats, booking cabs and transport from our hostels and giving us the beautiful once in a lifetime opportunity to do the Huayhuash trek. It took all of the stress of planning out and I would say it’s definitely on the higher side price wise, but every dime was worth it and well spent. Our guide Wilder, and our cook Elias were both very great, friendly, helpful, intelligent, and made the whole trip a wonderful time. The food was absolutely delicious and it was stunning how they were able to make such high end meals for us the entire trek. Wilder our guide did such an amazing job pacing us and pushing us to achieve our maximum speed, but he was also so kind and understanding if we needed to slow down or weren’t feeling good. It genuinely felt like a little slice of heaven and for anyone who is on the fence I strongly encourage you to take the leap with Los Amigos De Huayhuash. I couldn’t be happier, thank you so much for everything Los Amigos De Huayhuash!!!Publicado en Tripadvisor MarsupialFanVerificada Simply outstanding My friends and I did an 11-day Huayhuash trek with Los Amigos in Aug'25, and had a fantastic experience. Los Amigos is a 300% (100% founded, 100% owned, and 100% operated) local family business with amazing people. Anamin was incredibly helpful and supportive throughout the entire process, helping us plan the trip, choose the route, put together the packing list, build the altitude acclimatization plan, and more. She even helped us with selecting day trips and arranging transportation *after* returning from Huayhuash, free of charge. Adolfo, our guide, was excellent. He paced us expertly throughout the trek to ensure that we get acclimated and have the right level of energy to tackle all the passes. This was accompanied with sprinkles of knowledge sharing about the local culture, history, flora, fauna, and the environment at just the right amount to enrich the gorgeous landscape with layers of enriching information. Our cosinero (chef) was a-m-a-z-i-n-g. We just couldn't believe the quality of food he produced every day, especially given that he was cooking in a tent in a middle of nowhere with practically no kitchen facilities (e.g. he was slicing and dicing with the cutting board resting on his lap while he's sitting on small stool). Crepes... Steaks... Milanese... French fries... Curry... Yummy salads... Heartwarming soups... And yes, even freshly baked cakes! The food was not just soul-nourishing but also very nutritious and helped us maintain and build physical strength throughout the challenging trek. The logistics were flawlessly managed and the equipment Los Amigos provided was excellent. Everything hummed along per plan and on time, allowing us to fully enjoy the experience without worries. I can go on and on... But you get the picture. I cannot recommend Los Amigos enough. Thank you, Anamin, Adolfo, and the rest of the team for an unforgettable trip! Publicado en Tripadvisor Mark HVerificada Nothing Short of Amazing! Just finished an 8-day trek with Los Amigos de Huayhuash (huayhuash-trek.com) with my son and me. What an incredible experience and service! I was continually impressed and surprised with the level of service, small touches, and flexibility of our guide and crew. After my son’s flight was delayed a day, the guide adjusted the plan to account for our different fitness levels, experience, and time requirements. All along the way, Adolfo (our guide) balanced the demands of such a trek with the local knowledge of what the best views and routes were. He took us places that would be breathtaking and memorable. He shared stories, gave insights to the culture, and thought way ahead of us to make our trip comfortable in the midst of high-altitude hiking. The team cook, Yobanni, was a magician. He prepared 2-3 courses per meal of gourmet cooking. He made sure we had clean water and small food to carry as we hiked. To top it off, he hiked the trails himself in order to meet us for lunch and bring a great meal during the hike itself. Who does that? Abner led the horse and donkey crew and set up camp each day so when we arrived the tents and equipment were ready to go. He made sure we had the equipment and comforts we needed without sacrificing the whole camping/treking experience. Los Amigos de Huayhuash was well organized (thank you Anamin), gave great planning tips, set up acclimation hikes to prepare us, and went out of the way to make the whole experience feel intimate, private, and just for the two of us. After seeing large groups on the trail, I am so glad we chose this team for our experience. It made all the difference. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience my son and I will never forget. I felt challenged, saw a new part of the world, learned to appreciate a culture and way of life, and was treated like we were the most important people on the planet. Thank you!Publicado en Tripadvisor Robert LVerificada Los Amigos de Huayhuash, no company is better! Los Amigos de Huayhuash (11-day trek in the Cordillera Huayhuash) Who am I and what were my expectations/goals for the trip? I am a serious amateur landscape & travel photographer. Thus, the emphasis of the trek for me was to walk the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit and extensively photograph what I saw and experienced. I am a 65-year-old male with extensive long-distance hiking and trekking experience (more than 50 years) in the United States, Europe, and South America. I would describe myself as a reasonably fit and enthusiastic hiker given my age. Walking the Cordillera Huayhuash allowed me to do two things I enjoy: 1) embark on a challenging hike surrounded by beautiful landscapes and 2) landscape & travel photography. Who are Los Amigos de Huayhuash? Los Amigos de Huayhuash is a family-owned and operated business specializing in guided treks in the Cordillera Huayhuash for over 20 years (https://www.huayhuash-trek.com/ ). They have extensive experience assisting photographers who wish to document their experiences in the Cordillera Huayhuash using a camera. Los Amigos de Huayhuash is by no means limited to working with photographers, however, but this is one of their areas of expertise. It seems strange to say, but there is only ONE Los Amigos de Huayhuash! The Valdez Rivera family own and operate this company. Don’t be fooled. Some companies have used similar sounding names and in one instance a woman falsely claiming to be a member of the Valdez Rivera family posed as a “guide” for several clients. The company provides a full-service experience: a guide, camping gear (I did bring my own sleeping bag and pad, but everything else is taken care of for you [tent, ground cloth, cooking gear, etc.]), food (includes all meals over the course of the entire trek), porter service (horses, mules, donkeys) to carry your gear. Pretty much all you need to carry are snacks and essentials in a day pack (and, for me, a camera and two lenses). My “team” consisted of Anamin (logistics), Adolfo (Anamin’s brother, the guide), Yovani (the cook), and Abner (another brother of Anamin and Adolfo, horseman/porter). Logistics: The administrative & logistical responsibilities are handled by Anamin (e-mail: losamigosdehuayhuash@hotmail.com ), who was extremely helpful with the planning and responded quickly to any questions I had regarding the trek (itinerary, pre-trek acclimatization hikes, arranging drivers, etc.). She will take excellent care of you and she will make sure you are ready for the trek (see below). Pre-trek Training: I am not a physical trainer. Your experiences may differ significantly from mine, but this is what has worked well for me: unless you’re a dedicated hiker or alpinist who walks regularly in high-altitude conditions, training beforehand is essential! I live in New York City which is at sea level and very flat. Start training at least several months before the trek. Do exercises that emphasize incline training (stairs, treadmill, hills/mountains if you have them nearby), progressively longer distance walks (minimally 5-10 miles a couple of times a week), core body training and work the legs (squats, lunges, mountain climbs)! If you’re someone who lives among or close to mountains and who hikes regularly (especially at higher altitudes) then this should help. Also essential are pre-trek acclimatization day hikes: do at least 3 beforehand. There are plenty of options around Huaraz (Los Amigos de Huayhuash’s center of operations and house with rooms available is located here). Anamin will suggest some hike ideas and arrange for a driver to get you to the start of each hike. If you can, arrive 3-4 days before your trek begins. Anamin will provide breakfast and has she has very nice rooms (accommodations are simple, very clean, and reasonably priced). Anamin and Wilder (her husband who also has extensive trekking and mountaineering expertise) are superb, gracious hosts. You will not want to leave! The Trek: Level of difficulty, type of terrain, average distance per day, altitude: I would describe the level of difficulty walking the Cordillera Huayhuash Circuit as moderate to difficult. There are, I believe, two main factors contributing to this: 1) the incline or steepness of the trails and, 2) the altitude (during the trek, you will be walking at altitudes that range from ~4,000 meters [~13,700 feet] up to ~5,000 meters [~16,500 feet], typically ascending at least one pass each day). Average distances per day are 8 km/day up to 16 km/day. Total distance is ~115 km (~70 miles). Your mileage may vary depending on specific routes/side trips taken or the length of the trek you want to do. You can discuss options with Anamin. I did an 11-day trek which encompasses most of the circuit. A typical day for me: Adolfo wakes you up 6-6:30 am and brings a nice, hot cup of tea to your tent, you pack up before breakfast, breakfast 7-7:30 am, hit the trail by 8-8:30 am. Expect 4-7 hours of hiking per day [8-16 km/day]. Stop for rest/snacks (typically, a portable snack is provided each day), lunch (sometimes in camp if a short hike that day, sometimes lunch along the route), arrive in camp (short rest, tea, dinner around 6:30 PM). Sleep or do astrophotography afterwards. The campsites: generally spacious enough to not be camping too close to others (some sites had a lot of people, though [Janca & Carhuacocha, esp.]). Bathrooms are pretty basic, not always functioning (bring your own TP!). The campsites will have stunning views of the peaks and, depending on which side of the range you are on, you can enjoy amazing sunsets or sunrises. The guide (Adolfo): Adolfo has extensive knowledge of the area and the route which he loves to share with his clients. He was able to make great suggestions regarding spots to photograph, route options, alerted me to changes in weather forecasts (without internet!). He prepared me for what to expect each day, plus he was willing to carry some of my extra camera gear. In short, Adolfo is the reason why the trek was so successful for me. He was super patient and encouraged me to go slowly and keep a consistent pace. This really helped me get through the 11 days without feeling overly exhausted by the end of it. The food (Yovani): In a word, superb. Each meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) is a feast. You will be treated to omelets, bread that he baked, hearty soups, pork and chicken dishes with rice or potatoes, salads, tasty desserts, etc. Yovani is a magician. He is able to prepare a delicious meal practically anywhere (in the tent, next to a glacier, etc.). In short, the meals are designed to provide sustenance, they are tasty, varied, and you receive ample portions. Porter/horseman (Abner): Aside from the 4-5-hour drive from Huaraz to the first camp in Quartelhuain, modes of portage are limited to horses, mules, & donkeys. Abner Valdez Rivera, the oldest of the siblings, is the man who packs up and transport the entire camp to the next destination each day. I cannot stress how hard his job is and yet he does it effortlessly and with a smile. He’s as tough and hard-working as they come, but he is a sweet, kind, gracious, and funny member of the team. And these three men (Adolfo, Yovani, & Abner) are a real team. They genuinely like hanging out and working together. They have a great time with each other and their positive attitude and encouragement is infectious. You will become a better human being spending time with them. Not only did I get to experience the Cordillera Huayhuash, I also gained insights into Peruvian history, culture, cuisine, etc. If I could go back again now I would. And I would make sure to hire Los Amigos de Huayhuash again. They focus exclusively on this region of Northern Peru, they know the area extremely well, and they work hard for you so that you will enjoy a safe and fulfilling time while there. Thus, it is with absolutely no hesitation that I recommend Los Amigos de Huayhuash to anyone who wants to explore this most beautiful part of the world. For anyone interested, I have posted photos of my Huayhuash trek on my website (https://bobloudonphotography.com/cordillera-huayhuash-peru-2025). This might be especially relevant for the photographers out there who are thinking about visiting the Cordillera Huayhuash, but the photos should give anyone interested a sense of what I saw and experienced.Publicado en Tripadvisor Philipp RVerificada Simply the best My wife and I just completed a 12-day trekking tour of the Huayhuash circuit. We were so happy having engaged with Los Amigos de Huayhuash because their personalized service and care was just the best. We chose to stay at the fantastic guest rooms of the Valdez family in Huaraz during the acclimatization period. The three warm-up hikes came with ever increasing altitude to get used to the Andes. Even so, my wife early in the trek did develop Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). Our guide, Adam, was super knowledgeable and we had to descend to Llamac and spend a night there on a lower altitude. Once recovered, we still followed our entire schedule by sacrificing a rest day on the trail and by combining two sections into a single day. We took our time on the trail to study the flowers, animals, geology, the Peruvian culture, taking pictures, enjoying the scenery and by resting after the delicious meals offered during the day. We learned a lot from the never-ending knowledge that Adam passed on. Because we tended to always arrive last in camp, we were called the “Tortugas of the Cordillera Blanca” – we carried this name with pride as we thoroughly enjoyed our slowness on the trail and we made use of many scenic detours along the way. We both wholeheartedly recommend Los Amigos de Huayhuash. The Valdez family, with its deep roots in the region, provides a setup that truly enables a successful and joyful tour in an otherwise very remote region that would be difficult to explore individually.Publicado en Tripadvisor Charles HVerificada Los Amigos de Huay Huash Myself and two friends have just completed a 10 day Huayhuash trek with the wonderful Los Amigos de Huayhuash team. I have been on many amazing treks in Pakistan, Nepal and Uganda, and this is up there with the best. Apart from the incredible scenery, what made this really special was the Los Amigos crew. A local family run company they provided both a professional and personal service. Everything was perfect, from the charming early interactions with Anamin, to the friendly and knowledgeable guide Aldolfo, to be the amazing food provided. No idea how Giovanni did it, but every meal was great. Meals included fresh trout, daily soups, and even a delightful poached pear desert. Nothing was too much trouble. Just loved this team. If you are thinking of doing this trek...stop looking and just book with Los Amigos de Huayhuash..and make sure you are booking with Anamin and the Valdez Rivera family, A final tip if Anamins place in Huaraz is available, stay there, it's great.Publicado en Tripadvisor Michael WVerificada My two friends and I have just returned from our 10 day trek with the amazing Valdez-Rivera family company into the Cordillera Huayhuash. What a blast! I cannot recommend it enough - in my case, the trip of a lifetime. We were so well looked after by the team - from the exceptional care of organiser Anamin in Huaraz, to our expert and entertaining guide Adolfo, cook-extraordinaire Giovanni, and two donkey, horse and tent wranglers Abner and Alec. We could not have asked from more.
